Have you finally made the decision to have a laser hair removal, and to have that beautiful hair-free skin without using raisers, waxes and other annoying stuff?! Wonderful!
People often think that laser hair removal is unsafe during the summer. That’s not true. Summer is, as any other season in the year, safe time to have laser.
Why This Myth?
This myth about laser hair removal being unsafe during summer came into existence because advice is always given to stay out of the sun before any treatment. And why is that so?
Laser hair removal uses wavelengths that concentrate on the melanin pigment. These wavelengths target the pigment without damaging the skin that is around it.
When laser hair removal was first introduced, the lasers could not focus wavelength and if your skin was dark, it was hard to remove the hair. So, because people tan in summer, it’s reasonable to assume that it will be hard to precisely find the melanin which is in the hair follicle.
This is partially true, but technology is now far more advanced and lasers of new generation can go past the skin and find the melanin to successfully and safely remove the hair. This, of course, doesn’t mean we encourage you to soak in the sunshine.
Wear SPF 30
Whether you will have laser hair removal this summer or not, remember to always put sunscreen protection! The best factor is 30 and above.
Maybe you think you will not get any sun exposure by just catching the bus, but that’s absolutely not true. Your face, neck and arms are constantly exposed.
So, when a laser technician asks you if you had sun exposure, you will think twice.
A Safe Rule
Keep the area which is to be treated away from the sun two weeks before the laser procedure. After the treatment, avoid the direct sunlight for a week.
This is important to avoid complications such as blistering and hyper/hypopigmentation.
Laser hair removal is a treatment that needs months for optimal results (six to ten sessions every 6-8 weeks). If done in summer, a custom summer treatment plan should be done.
Follow Post-Treatment Regimen
Post-care is crucial. Use SPF 30+ every time you are exposed to the sun, and use moisturizers to keep your skin fresh and healthy.
A laser technician may also tell you to use topical vitamin E. Follow his/her post-care instructions.
Choose a Reputable Place Supervised By a Physician
It’s important to find a place with a professional and skilled staff. Have a good first consultation where a plan will be made just for you and your needs.
If you are treating bikini zone and underarms, the laser hair removal can be done safely any time of the year, because these parts are covered by clothes.
If arms are being treated, you will get some advice from a laser technician because such parts are exposed to the sun most of the time.
